We are impacting lives in Orange County everyday with the generous support of donors.

“Our experience at St. Mary’s was great. My son was very happy with his care, which is saying a lot considering he’s an RRT. He was thankful for the care he received.”
A Man of Service
Celebrating the generosity of donor and volunteer Richard Schmitt
For Richard Schmitt, service has always been at the core of his identity. Whether as an Air Force veteran, a special education teacher or a dedicated volunteer and donor at Providence St. Mary Medical Center, Richard’s life has been a testament to giving back.
Born and raised in Chicago, Richard’s life took him across the globe, from serving in the Air Force to marrying his wife, Pranee, in Thailand. His career in administrative management allowed him to see the world, but it was his return to the U.S. that marked the beginning of his deep commitment to community service. After retiring from the Air Force and completing his education, Richard spent 18 years teaching special education, focusing on helping children with reading and math challenges.
In 2013, Richard retired from teaching, but his desire to serve did not retire with him. The following year, he began volunteering at Providence St. Mary, where he has since become a familiar face, especially in the hospital lobby. “The nurses, the patients, everyone here — they’re like family,” he says.
Richard’s dedication to the hospital goes beyond his volunteer work. He has been a consistent donor since 2009. His generosity recently culminated in a significant legacy gift through a charitable gift annuity and retained life estate. These tools not only reflect Richard’s careful planning but also his desire to ensure the future of Providence St. Mary.
“I like to help people,” says Richard. “Giving back is important to me, and I want to support this hospital that does so much for our community.” His legacy gift reflects his commitment to ensuring that Providence St. Mary continues to grow and serve the High Desert community for generations to come.
